Titan's Surface

December 17, 2004

Until 1994, the optically opaque atmosphere of Titan completely hid the
satellite's surface from view. In 1994, the Wide Field-Planetary Camera on
the Hubble Space Telescope provided the first glimpse below Titan¿s cloud
layer. A large white area approximately the size of Australia is seen in
this image. Because this region rotates at the same rate as does Titan, it
is believed to be a surface feature.
